TechSpot: Shaq-Fu is Back
011 years
Back in 1994, EA and a couple other game developing companies decided to make a game drawing from the insane popularity of the basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, commonly known as Shaq. That’s how Shaq-Fu was born, and to be honest, it was a complete flop. Called the worst game ever. By the makers of the game itself. There is even a website out there called Shaqfu.com which is dedicated to collecting and destorying all copies of the original Shaq-Fu and stopping the production of the new one.
That’s right. Shaq-Fu is back. After 20 years since EA’s disastrous release of the game, Big Deez Production decided to team up with Shaq to bring it back. Supposedly, they had gone through many other Shaq themed games, such as Shaqman, O’Neal Of Fortune and Shaq To The Future, but ended up picking Shaq-Fu. This may seem like a bad (or at least misguided) choice, but Shaq and Big Deez seem set on recreating a better game and clearing Shaq’s name in the gaming community. On of their slogans is ” This time we won’t FU it up.”, poking fun at their previous failure.
Shaq-Fu is basically a fighter/beat-em-up type game. It is Shaq against some evil looking enemies, with your health bar at the top right and the enemy’s in the top right. With modern technology (such as 3D characters and better visual effects), if they do it right, the game could actually be good. So far, what they have put out looks cool. I mean look at this. Shaq looks like the Hulk. No wonder he’s funding this. Who, with the money, wouldn’t fund a game about themselves.
Since Shaq is incredibly wealthy, he could easily pay for this game all by himself, with extra money to spare for his custom size 23 shoes, but they want to bring it to the public and show potential investors that they have the public interest. So Big Deez put it on Indiegogo, and I have to admit, they have some pretty sweet “perks”. For instance, for only $150, a motion capture artist will make a custom move based off of a video of yourself performing you move, or you can make a voice over for one of the characters. For 400, Shaq-Fu artists will create you likeness into a Shaq-Fu style character. Some of the rewards are ridiculous, though, like the $35,000 perk where Shaq will DJ your party. And someone payed for it.
The whole game is a big maybe. After the flop of the original game, it might be hard to convince people that this game is much better than it’s predecessor. The goal of Big Deez is “to build a game that would kick ass even without Shaq.” This wouldn’t really work, unless they got another celebrity to fund it, but well just have to wait until the release to see what they do and the quality of the game they create.
FastNews: Flappy48, The Parody Game Extraordinaire
1This was bound to happen. After the internet exploded over two games, Flappy Bird and Threes, it was inevitable that someone would make parodies of them, the most popular being 2048 and Splashy Fish. These two games each had at least 40 different parodies combined, and it was getting a little much. But then someone had the brilliant idea of combining the games. And that’s how Flappy48 was born.
In Flappy48, instead of a bird, you are the number 2, and in between the overhanging tubes are more numbers you can combine with. Like Flappy Bird, it is extremely hard and frustrating. Like Threes, you get the urge to just play it again. I know it’s not the first, and it’s certainly not the last, but come on, it’s getting a bit ridiculous. You would think by now the fad of these parodies would fade away, but no, they’re still going strong. And now this game will bring along a whole new type of combination parodies ………. sigh.
But if you do want to play it, which I suggest you do, but only once, go here.
AOTW: Last Life Sci-fi Noir Game – Reinventing Murder Mysteries
0Eleven years after Earth was destroyed, the detective Jack Parker was killed on the transhumanist colony of MarsTopia on Mars. Luckily for him, the Dead Man’s Party holiday is just around the corner, when all the dead people get revived into a 3D printed body for one day to enjoy a gala. Of course, being the detective he is, Parker escapes and goes on a crazy adventure to find his killer, while at the same time maybe finding out what triggered Earth’s demise.
At least, that’s the plot for the exciting new Kickstarter campagin game, Last Life, by Sam Farmer. Last Life is a sci-fi noir game for PC, Mac and Linux that has been attracting a lot of attention recently.
Made in increasingly popular minimalist/modernist/geometric style, this game’s gameplay is similar to, from what they have already released, a choose your own path game, except with the ability to move around and interact with many different items and people. The whole game has a darkened feel, with the dark grays and maroons of MarsTopia in the background certainly not making the game feel more lively.
Throughout the game, you (Parker) will be scouring the streets of MarsTopia, which Farmer describes as “Orlando, Florida, but on Mars.”, looking for clues to find his killer. According to Last Life’s Kickstarter campaign, you will “wrangle deadly secrets out of an enormous cast of bizarre characters using whatever works: charm, bribes, or something less pleasant.” Sounds fun.
Not only capturing the imagination of the media, the creators of the massively successful Kickstarter game Broken Age, Double Fine took an interest in Last Life. So they decided to help Farmer with distribution, their crowdfunding campaign and more. In return, Last Life with be one of the first games to fall under the “Double Fine Presents” banner.
Not only does Last Life sound sooooo awesome, but it is a very realistic and possible version of the future (besides for the “Earth’s demise” thing). 3D printing, as I have said before on this website, is most likely going to be a big part of the future, providing an easy and affordable way to make products and more. Scientists are even speculating on a way to 3D print a moon colony, after they sent the machine that prints it up there. Who knows. Could happen. “The 3D printing idea just feels like a natural evolution of the technology,” says Farmer. “I mean, we’re already printing organs. And I’m fascinated by the implications of this tech and how it could lead to a post-scarcity society.”
Last Life is a game with amazing possibilities based off of its fantastic storyline, great set of characters and intriguing world state and scenario. This game could be absolutely a gigantic hit (which it no doubt will be) and become the game of the year, but that depends on a couple variables, including the length, the cost, the ability to replay the game and more. Surely though, after raising $50,000 (and counting to $70,000) on Kickstarter, money hopefully shouldn’t be a problem. The game changing idea that the game starts where you die, which is usually the end, is genius. Sure, the expectations are high, but from what we have now, the future’s looking bright for Sam Farmer and Jack Parker.
TOTW: Civilization V – Beyond Earth Announced
0Undoubtedly the most well known strategy game, Sid Meier’s Civilization has captivated gamers for more than 20 years. Over time, Civ has advanced a significant from the original version, and in late 2010, Fraxis and 2K (the companies who makes Civ) released the newest version, Civ V(5). Civ V was a giant upgrade, but still they strive to add more to the gameplay, previously adding more and more civs, situations, map packs, and gameplay features such as World Congress and Trade Units. Still, if you play the game, you know that the later part of the game can get boring and repetitive, which they are trying to fix, but with the newest announcement, the game will not only get more interesting but also longer.
At the Pax 2014 recently, Fraxis announced the release of their newest expansions pack (like the earlier Brave New World) called Beyond Earth. As the name suggests, the expansion pack will allow you to travel into space and, well, do what you do on Earth: settle, conquer, grow, repeat. This of course opens of the game completely, and basically gives the developers at Fraxis a field day. And what they have released certainly shows that.
From what they have said, Beyond Earth is set where Earth is unstable, and you need to find a new home. They have not said if you will start the game as normal, but that is something that probably won’t be known until the release day. You make a space ship based off of your playing style, and even chose a sponsor, each with different benefits. The whole way you colonize the planets is customizable, from the colonists to the cargo. The new planet is home to completely new alien life, (which should be interesting, considering civ’s very detailed civilization animations) tiles, and relics, all which you can exploit for the good of your civilization.
The technology will also be changed to accommodate the space travel. The tree will be split into three categories, each with their own technologies and victory conditions. Also, the new technology feature is not linear. Since your future is vague, the technologies come in sections based off your choices throughout the game.
Overall, the Beyond Earth pack should be full of surprises with new and fun (hopefully) gameplay. Other than the features I mentioned, there is a lot they haven’t specified, such as the exact game mechanics, or the switching between Earth and space. Units, tiles, resources, civs and even the basic rules of the game will be changed because of the new possibilities of space. Coming out in Fall 2014, Civilization Beyond Earth promises to be a groundbreaking game for the Civ franchise and series.
AOTW: Ridiculous Fishing Is Really Ridiculous
0Apps, especially game apps, should be slightly self-explanatory, and also funny or catchy for extra effect. The name of the game Ridiculous Fishing is certainly self-explanatory. The game, built in a modern/minimalistic sort of way is addicting, fun and quite ridiculous. And all you is fish.
There are already some fishing games out there on the market, but RF takes it to a whole new perspective. Instead of making a realistic fishing app, where you flick the phone to cast the line, and spin your finger to reel it in. RF is more of a puzzle/strategy game like Candy Crush or Threes turned fishing. In a good way.
To play, all you do is tap the screen, and you cast the line down the screen, which is like a cross-section of a ocean. On the way down, you have to avoid odd-looking fish so you can get deeper. When you hit a fish, you hook it and start going upward. On the way up, you try to HIT the most fish, hooking them so you can sell them at the top.
There is many ways in RF that keep you playing. To have a good game, you must have rewards or features that keep the game interesting. Otherwise, the gamer will lose interest and move on. There are exceptions, like Flappy Bird, but Ridiculous Fishing isn’t one of them. There is one way, when the deeper you get the species of fish get more divergent. When you hook a certain amount of fish, you can move on the next location. The second, lesser incentive is gaining more money to buy items.
Everything about Ridiculous Fishing is well thought out and designed. It may sound like I’m just being paid to say this, but you’ll just have to trust me. The modern design really looks great with the game, everything from the fish, to the wood grain on the boat, to the numbers look great. It has everything a game needs, and nothing about it could really be pointed out, like “Ohhh, the programmers really forgot about that, that’s bad.” If you don’t like the game, it’s just not your type. But I like it. (even it’s website is well made)
AOTW: Project Spark
0For the first time, one of the tech giants of the world, Microsoft, is actually getting into the gaming business instead of letting third party companies get all the money and fame. At first, Microsoft tried (and did) to make a game creation software of kids to urge them into the business. It was relatively successful, and Microsoft even put on a US Kodu Cup, a competition for kids to submit their Kodu games. But, the software had a blocky feel and not the best user interface. Even though Microsoft ended up not following up on Kodu, they did continue in the game creation business, eventually coming up the idea for a game called Project Spark.
Project Spark is also a game creation software, except a million times better than Kodu. Spark is also not only for kids. It’s smooth and intuitive way of quickly allowing you to create an amazing game that otherwise would need a lot of coding and graphics experience. Which brings up another virtue of Spark, it’s graphics. Microsoft must have spent a lot of time perfecting Spark’s graphics engine, since it is so complex, as you will see. Here are some of the main features of Spark that I will go over: (remember, it is still in the Beta/Alpha stage, so it has a ways to go before it will be released)
Terrain
The terrain tools in Spark are a very important feature, making up almost all of what separates Spark from the other game creating softwares. The tools are pretty simple; there is the cylinder tool, the roughen tool, the hill tool, the tunnel tooland much more. All these tools are design so that you can bend and shape the starting blank terrain the you get at the very beginning of you game. There is just your avatar and this flat, greyish land. Those tools I mentioned plus many more are a easy and new way to create the landscape of your game. You can make paths, rivers, cliffs, hills, canyons, and anything else you can imagine.
The paint tools in Spark are also as inventive and easy to use as the landscape tools. There are a couple options (more will probably be added) in which you can change you blank starter-terrain into a fully fledged game terrain. The paint tools are pretty simple. You just size up and down the area you want to change, and start painting. The great thing about Spark’s tools are that they adapt to you game. If you want your cliff to be a desert cliff, the only the flat parts of the cliff will be painted with the classic desert paint. The rest of the cliff would be painted in a sandstone cliffy feel like it would actually be in the real world. This goes with all of the paints, giving your game a great, real feel.
The Brain
The brain function of Spark is pretty much the heart and soul of the game. Without it, it would just be a game where you can create your own terrain. With the brain, you have complete control over every little detail, every prop, every character. Basically, the brain is made of basic game programming, very similar to the kind of programming you would see in other anti-programming softwares. The classic When/Do code. You can add something in the When section, such as “detects player”. Each word you add in is easily selected out of many different options that Spark automatically loaded in. Microsoft has been using the “pet rock” example in their demonstrations, which is a very easy brain command. They added the “detects player” line into a rock’s mind, which was previously empty, and then added “follow player” into the Do section. This can be easily set up, changed, scaled, painted, and added to so that your game is completely yours. There is a brain gallery, just like the terrain gallery or the prop gallery, for less experienced players to have a starting point.
Props
Props are an easy way to add very important elements to your game. There is a huge prop gallery in Spark, covering everything from weapons to effects like sparkles or fire balls. Each prop has a brain, and you can easily go in and change it. Some of the most used props are houses, weapons, coins and more. You can easily add an objective to your game using props, such as getting the coin or finding the end spot. Another great feature of props are that you can mush them together with the ground and other props. If you only want the top half of the prop showing, you can just move it so that the other part is underground. You can also glue props together, in such a way to give the impression of a whole new prop. You can even add props such as rocks and house part on your avatar to give your self armor. It really just depends on what you want to do.
There is so much more amazing tools, props, effects, and brain function to Spark, and even more that they haven’t released yet. The Spark team has done a brilliant job making the perfect “create your own game” game. What’s even more amazing about Spark is the level of detail you can go into and how easily you can just start playing and start testing your game. The game has already generated a ton of excitement, and even more is sure to come when it is released. Unfortunately, they have not given a release date, but if you want to get early Beta access, you can go to Spark’s website and apply. Spark can also be played on the Surface and the Xbox 360 and One.
TOTW: Google’s New Minecraft MOD, qCraft
0Every generation has it’s fads, it’s popular way to dress, style, colors, how to act, but even more than all of those, especially for the newest generation, video games. And this current fad which almost everyone has heard of, is Minecraft. Except in Minecraft’s case, it has absolutely taken over the world and shows no sign of stopping. It is a indie-genre, or a genre it almost completely revived, sandbox games. Minecraft is a game where you are a guy in a now-famous world made of blocks. There are a couple modes of play, but the main one, creative, is set where you have unlimited resources, blocks and anything else that you can possible make in the game. Obviously, with that power, someone is going to go crazy and spend years making one building. Well, the results of these amazing buildings and statues are so good, Google has come up with it’s own MOD (a add in to the game to modify or add certain blocks, animals or abilities), qCraft.
Many of these Minecraft experts produce so intricate and well planned structures that even Google are saying “Hey, we can benefit from this.” qCraft is an attempt to get the newest generation of geniuses into a subject that I guess nobody would get into otherwise: quantum mechanics. In the MOD, qCraft introduces a new tool for Minecraft experts to play with. It lets them make block appear out of thin air, or only appear when you turn to look at it from a certain position. This is new for Minecraft users, the only equivalent would be having blocks be pulled into the ground by sticky levers. Still, this brings a whole new perspective, to the game, actually being to play around with the equivalent of something useful in this world.
So far, Minecraft has been purely out of fun. But, Google are trying to make it something that can help the world. And who knows? Maybe Minecraft will turn out to be the next easy and fun way to teach or learn. Just trying shows that anything can help, even video games, if you set out to make it. Minecraft is just the perfect example, since millions of young geniuses are spending many days working on something that they actually like, also stimulating their brain. I know, computers hurt your brain blah blah blah, but if they are going to spend time on the computer playing mindless games, this is just starting it off in the right direction.
TOTW: Godus, The Ultimate God Game
0Ever wonder what it would like to a god, if there even is one? What it would be like to move mountains, shape rivers, influence civilization, kill peasants, build houses and discover new land? Maybe not, but wouldn’t it be cool? Well, Peter Molyneux and 22Cans answered that little voice in the back of your mind saying “yes!” Not literally, but Godus, their new Beta game, puts you in that role. You can do everything that I so nicely put in the list above, and more.
Godus is Minecraft-style game, but very different in it’s own great ways. The plot of the game is quite simple. You start in a nice, small island with palm trees. Only two people are on the island are your 2 starting followers. They will be the original ancestors of your whole civilization. Eventually, you will create a pathway of land that will connect your island back to your original homeland. it is lush, green hills and plains with lots of space to build houses and grow you civilization (terrain varies).
The terrain is made up of topographic layers of ground that you, as god, can manipulate to, for instance, make space for housing. To make a house, you have to have a person wander over to a free plot of land. Unfortunately, the people are not under you direct control. Your two little followers are pretty easy to control, considering they get attracted to free plots of land. Once they go to a plot of land, they start building on it. A building takes varying time to build, depending on the size of the plot (30 seconds to 40 minutes). Once that is done, your followers go into the house, in which they produce a child in a certain period of time. If there is a job to be done in the vicinity, a little flag will pop up over the house to show that a person inside is ready, and your can click on him to let him out.
But if you thought letting him out would be free, or even changing the landscape is free, boy are you wrong. That’s what makes the game so diverse. There is this elixir-type thing in the game that you use as money. Getting people and changing the landscape cost money. Building houses, fortunately do not cost money. You get money by periodically clicking on the floating blob of elixir above every house, like people. The bigger the house, the more the money. The only other way to obtain and greedily spend money is chopping down trees and rocks, and buying one time special abilities and statues.
You progress in the game by finding resource cards and shrines. Remember, at the start, you only get a certain amount of land to work with. The rest is cut off in a colorless wall around your territory. You can expand your workable land by two ways. The first is by finding shrine relics and luring people (three at most) to come reestablish the shrine. Once the reestablishment is done, you get a expansion card, which expands your land. The second is by getting a certain amount of people, resulting in you getting either a ability or a expansion card. Each time you hit a population checkpoint, the next one is a little bit farther. That is another one of Godus’ ways of making sure you always have a goal.
Godus is based on the fact that you are shaping a growing civilization. To make the technology grow, and obtain better and better abilities, you have to find resource cards. They are the heart of the game. The sign that a resource card is hidden underneath the ground is that confetti is puffing above the ground. If you remove enough layers, you will hit a chest. Inside the chest, a resource card is hidden. Once you get a certain amount of certain resource cards, you can unlock technology cards such as bigger houses or the calendar.
Godus is a nice mix of a strategy game like Civilization V, and a creative game, like Minecraft. The the way they designed the terrain gives the player a certain amount of power, but not to much so that they can just do whatever they want and have the game become a goalless game like Minecraft, which gets boring after awhile. Godus doesn’t. Godus is still in Beta, so your version will auto-update every time a new update comes out. You can get the Beta version on Steam.
